Eecient Algorithms for Diiusion-generated Motion by Mean Curvature

چکیده
The problem of simulating the motion of evolving surfaces with junctions according to some curvature-dependent speed arises in a number of applications. By alternately diiusing and sharpening characteristic functions for each region, a variety of motions have been obtained which allow for topological mergings and breakings and produce no overlapping regions or vacuums. However, the usual nite diierence discretization of these methods are often excessively slow when accurate solutions are sought, even in two dimensions. We propose a new, spectral discretization of these diiusion-generated methods which obtains greatly improved eeciency over the usual-nite diierence approach. These eeciency gains are obtained, in part, through the use of a quadrature-based reenement technique, by integrating Fourier modes exactly and by neglecting the contributions of rapidly decaying solution transients. Indeed, numerical studies demonstrate that the new algorithm is often more than 1000 times faster than the usual nite diierence discretization. Our ndings are demonstrated on several examples.

Diffusion-Generated Motion by Mean Curvature for Filaments
In previous work, we introduced a simple algorithm for producing motion by mean curvature of a surface, in which the motion is generated by alternately diiusing and renormalizing a characteristic function. This procedure is interesting due to its extreme simplicity, and because it isolates the connection between diiusion and curvature motion. However, it makes sense only for surfaces, i.e. obje...

We consider two model reaction diiusion systems of bistable type arising in the theory of phase transition; they appear in various physical contexts such as thin magnetic lms and diblock copolymers. We prove the convergence of the solution of these systems to the solution of free boundary problems involving modiied motion by mean curvature.
متن کاملConvolution-Generated Motion and Generalized Huygens' Principles for Interface Motion
A physical interface can often be modeled as a surface that moves with a velocity determined by the local geometry. Accordingly, there is great interest in algorithms that generate such geometric interface motion. In this paper we unify and generalize two simple algorithms for constant and mean curvature based interface motion: the classical Huygens' principle, and diiusion-generated motion. We...

A combined strategy of numerical dropping and ll-in is described for constructing an eecient ILU preconditioner which is well-adapted to Jacobi matrices generated by reaction-diiusion equations modeling diiusion processes in semiconductors. The method is based on a physically motivated subdivision of un-knowns into "essential" and "non-essential" ones.

In this paper, we discuss numerical schemes to model the motion of curves and surfaces under the intrinsic Laplacian of curvature. This is an intrinsically diicult problem, due to the lack of a maximum principle and the delicate nature of computing an equation of motion which includes a fourth derivative term. We design and analyze a host of algorithms to try and follow motion under this ow, an...
